Blasted through another Kenpo workout. Much better with the heart rate monitor going so I can make sure I don't inadvertently dog it during the workout.
Picked up Mondays AbRipper today too and it went real good. Maybe because I wasn't as tired as I typically am after a hard resistance day.
Tomorrow is rest day as well as the beginning of a new year.
Cool thing about 2011 was that I started and ended it with P90X.
Had a salt influx yesterday eve and I think I am retaining water...

Day 75...Legs and Back...ROUND 9
Good news and bad news....
Good news is that I am continuing to improve on the leg portion of this workout...dead lift squats, calf raise squats, single leg wall squats, etc...
Bad news is I have totally plateaud on the pull ups. I made myself do extra assisted reps today in hopes that may help me break through the wall.
Over-all good workout today though.
Ab ripper went well too :0)

Day 74...YogaX...ROUND 13
At this point, I am "Down in it!"
Seriously, I am ready to be in the video. I have even now broken through on the yoga belly routine and have my "boats" and "half boats" looking camera ready ;0)
With 3 more Yoga's to go, I will be ready for whatever X2 has to throw at me in this department...or maybe I should stay humble.

Day 73...Shoulders and Arms....ROUND 5
...and this is it for this particular routine! My chart is full and I am done once again with Shoulders and Arms.
GOOD workout today. I went in Knowing this was my last shot at glory and I took it! 30 sets of continuous Shoulder, Bi, Tri, Shoulder, Bi, Tri, and my arms were dead and my shoulders hardly able to keep them attached. I heavier up the weight as much as I could to keep a decent rep count and acceptable form.
This ended up being oe of the best rounds I have had to date.
AbRipper to top it all off...yeah, today was hard work.

Day 72...Plyo...ROUND 9
After nine rounds of Plyo and only one more to go before the end of this P90X journey I am thinking I am on the cusp of "waltzing".
Although I am not at the level of Dom during the second round of jump knee tucks, I am holding my own pretty good. Next week I will lay it all out and see if I can keep up with the crazy man.

Day 71...Chest and Back...ROUND 5
Fifth and final round of this particular workout.
It was tough getting started today, let me tell you what! I had to dig deep and push through...I wanted to go ut with a bang with this being the last round of Chest and Back, you know, put up some good numbers...and I did. There was an overall improvement and I only thought I was gonna barf twice.
I was feeling pretty drilled afterwards so I decided to bank AbRipper, so look for it on Saturdays post.

Day 69...KenpoX...ROUND 10
It's moving, it's grooving, it's KenpoX!
Wrapping up the week here...used a heart rate monitor finally for the first time doting this workout (or any workout for that matter). Pretty good. Nice to know when you are in the zone. During the breaks, instead of the usual jogging in place I run down my driveway to the middle of the street and then sprint back up. Its much better than jogging in place and more exhilarating.
Merry Christmas Eve!

Day 68...Legs and Back...ROUND 8
Today was the moment of truth...can I get 16 pull-ups done in one set?
Unfortunately, I missed the mark. :0(
I was doing pretty good but on my way up for number 15, my left hand slipped off the bar and I hit the ground. I am suspecting my still broken finger as a contributing factor to my loss of grip. I was bummed, but I always have next week.
Overall, I felt a little low energy during today's workout, but I did get dead lift squats done without the other foot down. Didn't get the full reps in but it's a start!

Day 67...YogaX...ROUND 12
Todays Yoga workout went by like lightening! Not sure if the better I get at it the quicker it goes by but it seems that this workout has moved quickly as of late.
The note of the day is that I noticed the yoga belly part was a bit more manageable this time. That was a nice surprise.

Day 66...Back and Biceps...ROUND 4
Back to the good ol Corn Cobb pull-ups!
I got a new pull-up assist device to help get in more quality reps for days like today when your arms are so shredded you can hardly move them and pull-ups are near impossible to do on your own. It worked better than I expected in all honesty. It helps you just enough while keeping you working which I found difficult with the chair.
Biceps went good...I really worked my butt off and squeezed every last rep out that I could possibly muster. Overall reps were about flat but I think it was because I was low energy this morning.

Day 65...Plyometrics...ROUND 8
Plyo, Plyo, me-oh, my-oh!
Working my way to "waltzing" status. Got only a couple weeks to go of this jazz which means that I need to figure out how to keep up with Wild Man Dom in quick order!
It is the week before Christmas and I am tightening up the program...less carbs, mostly protein...kind of a crash course fat burner just for the heck of it. You know, to get inthe Vhristmas spirit I suppose.

Day 64...Chest, Shoulders, Triceps...ROUND 4
This is the mother of all chest workouts. I didnt look at my old sheets for this workout today, I just went for it. I will have to go back and compare and see how I stacked up.
Even at this stage of the game I have to do girly pushups which sucks. I mean, when will I get to the point where I can bang out some good solid reps without dropping to my knees?
The combination of Chest, shoulders, and tri's really does a number. Considering a push up works all three of those muscles to begin with, the workout only wrings you out further by adding specific shoulder and Tricep exercises after each set of push-ups. It's a brutal circuit and it rotates 8 times.
So the moral of the story is, I just may have to wait until after X2 to master this particular workout...I mean one-arm pushups? Really?

Day 62...KenpoX...ROUND 9
Had a full house today...3 folks rocking the P90X this morning...it's a beautiful thing!
I was so sore from the previous days legs and back workout (still am actually...even more so) I was not exactly enthused about Kenpo today.
Working through the pain, I bumped into a side cramp early on and kept on going. Got through that. I got a good idea during one of the breaks to run down the driveway and then sprint back up instead of just running in place and doing jumping jacks. That was good. I am going to keep that variation in place for the rest of the program.
Got that postponed AbRipper routine in at the end and lit up my gut like napalm.
I know that under this little insulation I got going I have Some sort of "pack". Maybe 2 or 4 or 6 even, whatever i got, I know that once I roll into X2 and fully implement the nutrition guide I will be able to find out fo' sho'.

Day 61...Legs and Back...ROUND 7
Time to measure up.
First Legs and Back routine of Phase 3. (I am now in Phase 3 by the way.). First round of pull-ups I hit 14. I know I could have made it 15, but it was gonna be ugly so spared myself the shame. I am real close to where I wanted to be by Christmas. Next Friday will be the day of truth...do I get my Christmas gift to myself or not? 16 pull-ups straight through. That's all I asked for and I have been working hard and being good so there should be no reason I don't get it.
I didn't get to my total pull-up rep count of 80 today. I only hit 75, up 3 from last week.
Gotta get after those dead lift squats! Still gotta spot myself of these ones with my foot. Not happy about it....but do your best and forget the rest, right?
AbRipper was a mother...afterwards I just laid there for a while contemplating my life and what it would be like without legs.

Day 60...YogaX...ROUND 11
60 day benchmark boys and girls!
Time is flying and I don't know where it has gone. I guess that is a good thing and a bad thing. Fact is, I am not ready for the holidays or the year to be over quite yet. I need it to slow down a minute so I can get my bearings.
Tony says at the beginning of yoga,"Clear your mind, forget about all you were doing before, and all you have to do afterwards..."
I WISH MAN!!!!
If I could accomplish that I think I would be in a lot better shape. Fact is, I have this routine down just about cold with only some difficulty yet during yoga belly7... My goal really needs to be to learn to clear my mind if only for 90 minutes...or even a part of the 90 minutes.
I need to take meditation classes I think. That could be real good.
Cappy said that today was the hardest day so far for him...oh the memories...LOL!

Back to the GLAMOUR MUSCLE routine!
Work my butt off today on this one. It was seriously to the point that my arms were rendered useless. (That's why I didnt post afterward.)
So quickly how I forget how some of these routines annihilate you. I felt strong and motivated and I liked my form throughout. I upped my weight and reps to a good level where it was all i could do to keep the weights from slipping out of my hands at some points.
...and you should have seen the Captain go! That boy has sme perseverance I tell you what! I think we are going to be seeing results city soon if we can keep him healthy.
Had a time shortage today so AbRipper will be done on Saturday this week.

Day 58...Plyometrics...ROUND 7
Whoa, Captain Evens bringing up the level!
Considering this fella has probley not done anything that even resembled a workout for a decade at least, plowing through an hour of P90X Plyometrics is an accomplishment to note for sure! It's an easy routine to get sidelined on but Cappy kept a good pace, modifying the moves enough to see the time through even though he admits to not being able to feel his legs about halfway through.
Props to you!
My own run through today was good and felt very strong and solid. Not "waltzing" quite yet, but it's not out of reach. The big question for me is...Will I be able to keep up with Dominic on the jump knee tucks? I think if I can then at that point I am certainly at the point of "waltzing".

Day 57...Chest and Back...ROUND 4
Ahhhhh...back to day one! Seems just like yesterday I was warmly welcomed back to the P90X club with the ol' Chest and Back routine!
Well it was a good go at it today. Big thing I noticed was the improved stamina I have throughout the routine. Numbers are up across the board and I felt way more solid in and out.
Ab Ripper however was tougher than the last time. Seems like a week off of Ab ripper comes at a cost. We shall see if I bounce back Wednesday though.
PHASE 3 IS NOW IN FULL EFFECT!!!!! Here's to a strong and healthy finish!

Morning Yoga session to start off the weekend...not much to report here as I am doing this routine pretty well at this point. The area of weakness is still at the Yoga Belly 7 portion. All that isometric business is rough. I really don't know how long it is going to take until I can properly complete that 7 minute bit.
How about a round of applause for the Captain?! First day of Yoga for the man and he felt it I tell you what! Brought me back to day 1. It will be interesting to see the weekly improvements with this guy who is steadying from scratch EVERYTHING.

Day 54...Core Synergistics...ROUND 4
Had a headache going into this workout today. The kind where it hurts more when you move and is excruciating when you jolt your body.
Running in place and jumping jacks in the warm up were not pleasant as a result. Of course though, I perservered through it and after all was said and done my headache went away shortly after my workout.
Here are the goals I have for the routine:
Prison cell push ups...15 reps
Plank to Chattarunga run....Last the whole time period.
Squat run...incorporate weights
Lunge/Kick back/curl/press...20 reps with 15 lbs dumbbells.
Doesn't sound to tough but it will be, believe me. Especially since there are only 4 rounds of this left if I do back to back recovery weeks at the end.
Captain made a good showing today. Pushed through the whole thing and did his best and forgot the rest. That's all you gotta do baby!

Day 53...STRETCHX...ROUND 2
A little something new to report here today. I have finally recruited a workout partner (temporarily anyway). The Captain has committed himself to the ways of the X from now until the end of the year. It's a quick tune up for a rusty old machine before it embarks on an international voyage for a couple months.
Lucky for the man he decided to start on a very easy day. Just an hour of stretching. Probley worked out good that way so as to ease those muscles into use again after so long.
It was a good session and it turns out the captain is a pretty flexible guy...at least more than you would think.
Good work dude...day one is done.

Back to the recovery week series of routines...Core Synergistics, yes, the SOB of rest and recovery. It's really this routine that makes the title of these particular weeks so misleading.
It moves quick...gets the blood flowing and fatigues you quick if you show up properly.
I got good bang for my buck today. I will feel it mañana Though...and that's a good thing.

Day 49...Kenpo X...ROUND 7
Yep...pizza comes at a price. I also had a bowl of minestrone soup for a late dinner which was probley loaded with sodium. I just figured I would go out with a bang yesterday since I rarely get a chance to get italian food from this old haunt.
So I woke up this morning to the sound of a damn smoke detector chirping as it does when it is low on batteries. 4:30 a.m.? No problem. It wasn't in the immediate room so it wasnt terribly loud...but DAMN! Those things are designed to create the most intense annoyance from no matter where they are located. Stupid safety devices and crap.
I persevered as long as I could. I didn't want to get out from under the covers because it was pretty cold, but even the unheated air of an empty house at 5:30 in the morning wasn't a match for the incessant intermittent chirp of that demon smoke alarm.
Out from the warmth of the down covers and into the frosty air with no quick fix available. Turns out the vaulted ceilings are in cahoots with the smoke alarms. So off to the garage to get a ladder. Oh yes...the crisp early morning air against my chicken skin and the cold concrete on my bare feet was exactly what I needed at that moment. Jumping in a lake would have been no more shocking.
I grabbed a regular 8 foot ladder and set it up in the hallway and climbed to the top and just as I was about to touch the smoke alarm, I heard the chirp again. Dang it! It's a different one! I look around for another and spot one in the entry way, but this ceiling is much higher. So back to the garage for a bigger ladder. Soooo coooold...even colder than the first trip for the first ladder.
Ladder in place and I am up it and what do you know?! Chirpitty chirp...from somewhere else!! What the hell?! I waited a minute or two. Still and quiet and freezing. Chirp. Ahhh...got you now you bastard. Down with you!
Not sure why the hell there needs to be 3 smoke detectors all within 15 feet of each other in an area that is not separated by any doors at all...but somebody figured that was the way to go. Add another 5 feet to the area and there are 4.
Mission accomplished. Now time to treat the mild hypothermia which has set in.
After a hot shower, I proceeded to console myself with a plate of hot cakes and natural maple syrup.
Just a perfect Sunday morning.
Oh yeah, then I did Kenpo later on.
And the pizza weigh in....

I'm up to 13 pull-ups. I could have squeaked in 14 but it would have been ugly.
Feeling pretty confidant that I will hit my goal of 16 by Christmas. What is really nice to see is that my recovery between sets is getting quicker and quicker so that I can keep my rep count up...and without the chair assist!
I am to a total of 72 unassisted pull ups for this workout. By the end of P90X I should be at 100.
Legs go well these days. Only problem I have is with dread lift squats still, and three direction lunges, and side to side lunges. I can't keep up with their pace and keep good form at the same time. Dead lift squats I can't even properly do. I still have to modify by keeping a toe down to lighten the load. Maybe next time I will try no toe, but only go part way down in the squat.
We are wrapping up Phase 2 pretty quick...rest and recovery is justbaround the corner..................

Day 46...Yoga...ROUND 8
I think this is the turnaround week. Or maybe the step up week. Especially today. I could have been on the DVD as good as I did Yoga today.
The first half of the routine (the hart part) flew by. The balance postures went perfect with no tumbling and stumbling at all. However, once it came time for yoga belly 7...my superstar yoga round lost it's steam.
That damn yoga belly!

Day 45...back and Bicep...ROUND 3
Halfway mark folks.
It's all down hill from here.
But it is not time to cruise and coast.
Finishing up Phase 2 strong here, and rolling into recovery week with a good attitude. Today was a good showing. Heavy'd it up on all the curl exercises and destroyed my biceps. Improved across the board on the pull up portion and am working hard to get to my 16 mark by Christmas. It's gotta happen!
My triceps are still sore as can be from Monday which is good because that means I worked hard there. I wonder how my biceps are going to feel tomorrow because I didn't back off an inch today...we shall see!
Tomorrow is Dec. 1. Brando is going to be firing up the motor on his P90 machine and burning rubber all month long in preparation for X2. I got your back brousaliah.

Day 44...Plyometrics...ROUND 6
I like doing Plyo with no shirt on so I can see my flabby gut dance.
I suppose the crowd is a little thinner than it was several weeks ago, but the dance party is definitely far from over.
Continuing to make incremental improvements here on Plyo. I only have 4 Plyo workouts left until I am done with P90 again. That should be enough times to really dial in this routine and ready myself for the X2 mayhem.
New goal is to be able to keep up with Dom on the second round of jump knee tucks.
It won't be easy.

Day 43...Chest, Shoulders, Tricep...ROUND 3
Chest, Shoulder, Tri, Chest, Shoulder, Tri, Chest, Shoulder, Tri....over and over like crimson and clover.
This is the workout that gets me the closest to ralping than any other. The types of pushups are so intense and make you squeeze your core so hard it just burns deep. You know you are taking your chest to school when you are knocked down to knee push-ups just to get some reps in. Brutal the first time...brutal every time.
The shoulder exercises are nice. I like to concentrate and do them slowly, focusing on my form, and achieving a slow building burn. I am a little timid to go too hard on my shoulders because I don't want to aggravate my left shoulder which stopped hurting finally a couple weeks ago. My approach has been successful in staying healthy as well as increasing strength week over week.
Triceps get hammered. By the end of this workout I am focuing all my energy in just keeping a degree of control of the weight.
So this was the last round of this routine in phase 2. We will be back in 3 weeks.

Day 42...KenpoX...ROUND 6
Little afternoon Kenpo session to break up the day.
I am glad I flip flopped yesterday and today. I was totally wiped out last night after the long day in the yard. I could have slipped in the Kenpo workout but it would have probley been sloppy and that is not what I am trying to do.
This morning I was feeling fatigued and did not want to get out of bed but I did around 7:30 and persevered through the morning. I felt like I was moving underwater. I ended up falling asleep on the couch for an hour around noon. Woke up with the sun jamming on my face, and got up and suited up and hit the garage hoping to jump start my day with some exercise.
Workout went good, got the blood flowing and a good sweat worked up and I finally feel like I have snapped out of this mornings sluggishness.
That was exactly what I was hoping to accomplish. Yeah!

Day 41... Rest...ROUND 6
If you are paying attention you would be saying, "today is not rest, it's Kenpo!"
I kinda got carried away with working in the yard today and packed it in just a few minutes ago after dark. It was a long day weeding the front slope, trimming trees, bushes, moving dirt around, weed whacking, and cleaning up basically the whole approach to my house.
I also installed my wall rack for my bike, and 86'd the shelf I made last week and installed a new one made of glass and metal instead of wood.
Got a ton done and am feeling it in my legs and back today for sure. Instead of rest tomorrow, I will Kenpo it up. Then it is will actually be like I did not have any rest days since I busted my ass today. Definitely didn't rest anything.

Day 40... Legs and Back...ROUND 5
For not liking leg workouts, this day is becoming a favorite somehow. I like alternating between leg exercises and pull ups. It allows enough rest in between sets of pull-ups so that I can do more of them in a clean and unassisted manner. I don't like having to throw the chair in the mix to help get more reps in. When the chair is there it messes with my head and I don't do as many as I actually could on my own. I know it is supposed to help but I think I like doing pull-ups unassisted until failure and then that's it.
Putting the hurt on the legs has become some kind of a challenge for me. There are still exercises that I can't do properly without a variation of the actual move. Dead lift squats for instance...I can do maybe 3, and they do 20. So I have to keep a foot on the floor a little to take off some weight so I can go all the way down and come back up again. One legged wall squats I have only recently been able to partake in properly. But now it is a matter of getting my leg up past the 90 degree point. And ultimately, I should be using weights on all the exercises that use them. I still don't on balance lunges, or alternating side lunges as they are challenging enough without....but I will get there.
Thanksgiving dinner must have been good...

Day 39...YogaX...ROUND 7
"Yummy yummy yummy...
Take in the fact that you just did that!"
Pretty good turnout today at Yoga. Getting deeper in the poses, did the warrior 3 and half moon section pretty much as good as Tony with good balance and everything. So yeah! for me.
The massacre just comes with the yoga belly 7 part. It only lasts half as long as the AbRipper routine, but it is intense like nobodies business! It's the isometric aspect that is tough for me. It's hard to sit for 30 seconds in boat, or half boat one after another. My gut and back just ignites on fire.

Day 38... Back and Bicep...ROUND 2
"I'M doing CORN COBB!"
Oh my goodness...the chick on this routine is so annoying. Everything that comes out of her mouth makes me want to do 40 reps of Congdon Locomotives on her face.
Sorry. Had to get that out of my system. Maybe I am cranky because the workout was not that good today for me. Was feeling distracted and less energized. I need to come back with a vengeance next week on this routine, no doubt about that.

Day 37...Plyometrics...ROUND 5
Raising up the level! Not waltzing but pushing it to the limit I can tell you that!
If I keep it up like this I will be waltzing through in no time. Just gotta keep healthy so I can keep bringing it up each week.
At the beginning Tony says "get your little bucket near by...". It's funny but I almost needed it today. Maybe that will be a good way to know that I left it all out of the mat, your know, if I throw up at the end of the work out. I was reading the Duff McKagen Autobiography, and he talks about throwing up all the time when he works out. Of course he was recovering from years of massive drug and alcohol abuse which may of had something to do with it.
Anyway...good Plyo today.

Day 36...Chest, Shoulder, Tri...ROUND 2
Not sure why exactly but I was feeling weak rolling into this workout...and that is not the way to approach this workout, what with all those flippin' slow motion push-ups! Those things really rip me up fast...UGH!
The push-up aspect of this routine gets me toasted about halfway through and I am reduced to knee push-ups...and they even are hard at one point!
Sure have a lot of work to do. The days and weeks are going by quicker than I could ever imagine. I hope I make some big improvements here fast.
I think I ingested too much salt over the weekend cuz...

Day 35... Rest....ROUND 5
...and that is just what I did.
If you don't count the shelf I built, the loads of laundry I did, and the general cleaning up around here.
Either way, I don't really like rest day. I feel blah in the evening every single time. Gotta get a nice recreational activity going that gets my heart rate up.
Guess I should just ride my bike.

Day 34...KenpoX ...ROUND 5
Owwww....the stretch and warm up for Kenpo was agony on my legs! Totally feeling it from yesterday's workout and was not sure if I was going to be able to be jumping around and kicking for an hour.
Well I managed, and my legs warmed up quick, but they felt heavy and I had to work hard to get through this routine today. I was slower and had to back up the disk a couple times because it was taking me longer to finish some sets of kicks etc...
No problem...do your bestband forget the rest baby!

Day 33...Legs and Back...ROUND 4
Killed my legs today. I upped my reps and weights on pretty much each exercise AND I finally was able to to one-legged wall equate with one leg. Today I felt the most burn in my life in my legs.
The pull-up aspect went good too. I am up to 12 pull-ups fresh so I am on track....sweet! I started off with a bang but then noticed in the middle of the routine my numbers were off from the last go at it. However, then I noticed I finished up better. Not sure how that works but that's how it went so it is what it is.
Arms are so sore from the Bicep blitz the other day!

Day 32... YogaX...ROUND 6
Dear Diary,
P90X YogaX is the only yoga routine I have ever done. Never took a class, bikram, yoga for surfers, or whatever the varieties may be. I like the P90X Yoga. It's a long session at 90 minutes, but it actually goes by pretty quickly. It is challenging and despite what some folks say, has variety. The routine makes sense as it builds and builds through the routine and then rolls right into a nice full body stretch, and then spikes you with a super intense but brief Ab workout before ending with some more easy stretching and relaxing poses.
I probley have a few more sessions before I am spot on again with this routine and the improvements I am making week to week are looking good. I will make sense to try an outside Yoga class at one point so I can see what the diff is all about. Especially since Brando is all about alternate Yoga classes. He seems to know what he is talking about, heck I believe him.
Still like YogaX though.

Day 31...Back and Bicep...ROUND 1
Ah yes the Corn Cobb pull-up...it's a thing of beauty. Took me a while last go round to get this one down. Looks like it may be a little while again to get back on the horse. I was already so wasted by the time the ol' Corn Cobb rolled around I needed the chair assist to do even one.
But what an awesome workout this one is. So many curls your arms lose their feeling. At the very end, the last exercise is 4 sets of strip-down curls. I had to start with 20 lbs only and ended up at 10 lbs! And that last 10 lbs set was pure pain!
Of course I am way off of where I left off after the last p90 adventure which sucks to think about, but I know I will snap it back in good time. I mean look....I am already on day 31. Halfway done with the first week of phase 2. Before you know it, I will be back at the boring rest and recovery week. Then it is all downhill from there.

Day 30... Plyometrics...ROUND 4
Back to the Plyometrics...
Good one today with the Plyo. My knee was feeling a little kookie so I did my best to go easy without sacrificing my workout. It all worked out and I was huffing and puffing and at the end i was not crippled.
I guess my goal for Plyo would be to be able to "Waltz" through the routine as stated was necessary to attempt X2 successfully. I have 6 more runs through Plyo so I gots ta mak'em count!!
Tomorrow is the great Back and Bicep workout so I will not be able to wash my hair til Saturday most likely.
Good thing I have a buzz. :0)

Day 29... CHEST SHOULDERS AND TRI'S (ROUND 1)
HOW IN THE WORLD DID I FORGET ABOUT TWO SPEED TWITCH PUSH UPS!!!! The complete chest massacre exercise!
This was definitely a good example of muscle confusion knocking the bearings loose! Probley the hardest workout yet for me in the resistance category and I loved it! This first day back on the resistance exercises was awesome. I know that muslces need to rest and repair and all that, but rest and recovery week was boring.
This is going to be an awesome phase I can just feel it already. My muscles were not timid as they were when I first started and I was all fueled up from my big spaghetti dinner the night before, and my monster omelette at breakfast. I am taking Hilarys advise somewhat and pumping in the carbs this month. Not crappy crappy carbs like chips and cookies and the such, but pasta, and whole grains.
Phase 2 is on effect!

Day 28...REST...ROUND 4 (REST AND RECOVERY)
Football, spaghetti, and Guns N Roses.
There is a theme here believe it or not. Football is played in stadiums, Guns N Roses also plays in stadiums, and also has an album titled " The Spaghetti Incident". Not that the 2 people that sporadically follow this blog know or care about that. Maybe by way of the TotaLiving matriarch, will Jason read this and remember the cool cover album GNR put out after the Use Your Illusion records.
You're my only home JAY-SHAF...
Anyway, at the "why not" suggestion my big sis made the other week, I am going to be carving it up this next phase. Lots of whole wheat pasta and the sort.

Day 27...YogaX...ROUND 5...(REST AND RECOVERY)
Ok, big difference. With the lights on I have regained my balance. The routine went well and without incident, but that damn Yoga Belly 7 part was painful! Huge weekness for me is boat and half boat. The goal is to get through this with no breaks even though Tony is cool and says that you can. Not me...I gotta hang with the kids on this.
Noticing better flexibility about now which makes sense. Still can't get my heels down in downward dog position. I used to be able to.
Tomorrow is rest day and concludes the first full phase of P90X. The clock is quickly ticking down to X2....

Day 25...Core Synergistics...ROUND 2 (REST AND RECOVERY)
Round 2 of this routine pretty much leaves me with the same commentary as the first. This time however seemed to go by quicker, but still was a good intense hour nevertheless.
This really is a good workout. I think I have said it before, that if I had just one workout I could do it would be this one...even though it's not my favorite. I think it is a very efficient workout and a great use of time. Core has not, is not, and likely will not be a strength for me for some time, but I am going to work hard here because I think this is another area of opportunity for me to improve like that Plyo workout.
Give me another couple months here and I'll show you the money.

Day 24...StretchX...ROUND 1 (REST AND RECOVERY)
Nothing like a full body stretch to make you feel like a million bucks!
I was really looking forward to this routine even though it is pretty boring. You know, just stretching for an hour.
After that hour though, I tell ya....you are feeling liiiiiiiiiiiimBER!! Even if you don't do P90X, this is a good thing to do every once in a while.

Day 24....KenpoX....ROUND 4 (REST AND RECOVERY)
Back at Kenpo today. Went quick this workout...just like Tony promised. I did notice a little pain in my right knee this time. Very minor but worth mentioning and worth keeping an eye on. I will have to make sure to pay good attention to form and the "quality over quantity" philosophy and I think it will take care of itself.
I may have switched Kenpo with Stretch but it shouldn't matter. I will be thankful for a nice stretch day tomorrow before I have to face Core Syn again on Friday.

Day 23...Core Synergistics...ROUND 1...(REST AND RECOVERY)
So here is the routine that in my humble opinion makes the name "REST AND RECOVERY WEEK" totally inaccurate. First of all you achieve a dripping sweat by the third exercise and you are still revving up for the good stuff! Engaging multiple muscle groups simultaneously really gasses you out. It is probley the closest exercise I have done that resembles the type of exhaustion a wrestling match results in. While it may be less intense than a wrestling match, it is 60 minutes vs. 6.
This is another routine that shows up twice this week. So there ain't no rest and recovery going on in this house.

Day 22...YogaX...ROUND 4 (REST AND RECOVERY WEEK)
Today Was my fourth go round at YogaX. I will have another whack at it on Saturday as the Rest and Recovery week starts and ends with the Yoga routine. I completed kyat the end of the day in one shot. I had ample energy and felt good throughout.
The one curious thing I did notice was during the balance portion of the routine I was seriously stumbling and tumbling. I couldn't keep my balance during "tree"' or " royal dancer" or "standing leg extension". Typically I am on point during this portion. Additionally, I was stumbling and tumbling during "standing splits" and "half moon" which are both pretty tough positions but ones that I had really progressed will into. I am wondering if the fact that it got dark toward the middle of the routine and I didn't break to turn on the lights if that had anything to do with it.
It was pretty frustrating but what ev's...

Day 21...REST...ROUND 3
Well, come the third round of rest and I think I pretty much have this routine nailed to perfection. This weeks rest went exceptionally well with a good day of NFL games and some pals to enjoy them with. Special thanks to BK for the homemade pizza. Not sure how healthy it was but the fact it was all made from scratch at least gives it a shot at having some nutritional value.

Day 19...Legs and Back...ROUND 3
Big gains today, especially on the pull up front. Probley a 40% improvement over last week which is crazy! I held up much better throughout the workout and the numbers were up up up! A nice motivator for me as I move into the rest and recovery week here.
Burned my legs ut good today too. Lit them up more than I have ever done before so I am anticipating a rough morning getting out of bed and rolling into Kenpo.
Ab Ripper was also more agonizing today. I had shoes on so maybe my feet were heavier and made the bicycle and crunchy frog and fifer scissor segments harder....who knows? I usually am barefoot but wear shoes on days were I am working my legs like Plyo, today, and kenpo.

Day 18...YogaX...ROUND 3
Kinda worked this one a little different today. Had to get out the door early so I did the "hard part" early in the morning which is about 45 minutes, and then did the "easy part" when I got back at the end of the day. I don't really like breaking it up this way but sometimes life calls on you to improvise so improvise I did. Of course I could have just saved the whole thing for the end of the day but I knew that would be a pain after driving to the border and back.
All went well for the most part during both parts but I wil tell you...that damn Yoga belly 7 is big B! Going from boat to half boat and torso twist whatever the hell sets my gut on fire! It is the one part of the whole yoga routine that I do not look forward to. I guess that should tell me something.
Here's a curious fact:

Day 17...Arms and Shoulders...ROUND 3
I found out there is a new P90X man on the scene...ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Tommy "Aloha" Mohler!
It's good to have you amigo as misery loves company...nah, just kidding. But it does.
Today would be his 3rd day in as a freshy so this should be fun to watch. In a good way, I meant that in a good way!
Today's Shoulders and Arms routine was Awesome! Huge milestone reached today. I am finally stronger than Drea Webber!! I don't care if she is a girl, she is bad ass and cut like a stone and I can curl, press, and dip circles around her so let just let me enjoy that a while. ;0)
Seriously though, for the third round I cranked it out, paying attention to my left shoulder which is still bugging me, as well as that dang pinky finger. Nevertheless, my numbers were up and my form was on point. I am trying to be conscious of this, as I told Brando today. It's a quality over quantity thing. If you shop at Walmart you wouldn't know anything about it.

Day 16... Plyometrics...ROUND 3
This post is a day late...I was so tired yesterday I forgot to do it.
Anyway, round 3 of Plyo and I am looking good! I am especially wanting to make good and sure I can dominate this Plyo workout in my sleep by the time X2 comes out. I guess the Plyo on X2 is basically retarded. Somebody close to the Beach Body camp said that if you can waltz through P90X Plyo, then you will be ready for X2 Plyo.
What does that mean, waltz?
I basically means that you execute the workout smoothly, and gracefully without strain. There is no flopping around and that you complete the workout in it's entirety as such.
I am completing the workout in it's entirety, and I think my form is pretty good, however I am in no way "waltzing".
I'm a little worried about Brando because he subs Plyo out for other intense cardio.
Get out your bucket and your glucosamine...

Day 15...Chest and Back...ROUND 3
Here we are already into week #3! Time is fricken flying!
Third time up to bat at Chest and Back and it was Jonny Intense like nobodies business! Squeezing out reps to utter failure and hurtin' for certain makin' the time count. Basically I have to lay it all out this week and close out the first phase in style. Next week is Rest and Recovery which only means not much resistance training. It probley could use a more appropriate name though as I never feel like I am resting or recovering in the slightest.
I haven't been seeing much weight loss, or fat loss yet which is interesting. I have cleaned up my eating big time and scaled the carbs down to barely 10% of my previous consumption...and that's on a bad day. I am trying to fuel myself up good each day. So I am taking in good portions heavy on the protein. Fish, steak, chicken, eggs...protein bars, muscle milk, lots of water. I have been making huge juices in the morning with a combined 10 servings of fruits and vegetables to kick start my day. I wonder if all the sugar in the fruit is no bueno.
I am planning on the same type of diet for the remainder of Phase 1, then for Phase 2 I would like to try something new for that month.
Open to suggestions.

Day 14....Rest...ROUND 2
Round 2 of rest day was executed with precision. Didn't do a whole lot of anything and I even slipped in a 2 hour nap.
Went to see Matt Nathanson at HOB SD at night. Great show, but it got me thinking...
The bandnis pretty much a bunch of 30 somethings and they are all skinny bean poles. What is thatball about? They are certainly not muscular or fit in anyway so there is no working out going on here...but do they not eat or something? At one point yr metabolism does slow down, and I have seen many of my old favorite bands plump up with age. The ones that still look fit obviously train and work to keep fit and maintain their sex symbol status.
I don't know, it was just something I noticed is all.

Day 13....KenpoX...ROUND 2
...and that is it for week #2!
Kenpo is a fun routine sort of. It used to be my favorite. It certainly goes by the quickest, but over all the times I have done it, I have kind of gotten bored of it. Maybe I am not a fan of shadow boxing or something. It's a good cardio routine, but I think I can get a better cardio workout done doing something else in that hour.
Just the same, I am going to stick with the program ver batem. That's how I like to do things. What I will do though I think is add a resistance session in that day too. Nothing crazy, just something more.
See you on day 15! Last week of phase one before rest and recovery week.

Day 12... Legs and Back...ROUND 2
I was going to wake up and hit up today's workout first thing in the morning and then hit San Diego and come home so I could just relax at the end of a busy week. Sounded like a plan until I couldn't get it together and instead I got to look forward to the ol' Legs and Back Routine with a round of Ab ripper X for good measure. After driving 200 miles my favorite thing in the world is to to bang out a mess of pull-ups and lunges. Heck no! But that's what happened.
What a power struggle that occurs in my head once I arrive home! I actually have to brainlessly put on my shoes and workout clothes and walk into the garage and press play and just go. I am amazed and appalled at all the excuses I can come up with...the rationalizing, deal making...it's a serious fight between good and evil.
So starting my workout is pretty much half the battle. Once I get going I am all good. I posted better numbers over last week so that trend is continuing.
I'm getting my arms back Brando...slowly but surely...

Day 11... YogaX...ROUND 2
What a difference a week makes.... (sing it kind of like that old C&R clothing commercial)
Last week I was stumbling and fumbling, this week I was calm of mind and body. You should have seen me, I was like a statue!! Sorry, P90X inside jokes, if you didn't do it, you won't know it.
Anyway, reflecting back on last weeks agonizing Yoga outing, I was a little gun shy for today's shot at it. Turns out my body was ready and last week was a memory and nothing more. Of course I am not 100%, but I surely was 100% improved from the prior week. I still can't believe how rough it was.
Yoga Belly 7, I will tell you just kills me! Boat and half boat?!?! Forget about it!
At the end of the day, I am motivated by the big strides I am now seeing which is awesome. It crazy to think that I am halfway through the first phase after this week already!
What a difference a day makes...and the difference is you!

Day 10...Arms and Shoulders. ROUND 2
Oh yeah....the glamour muscles! Tank tops in December here I come!
Good round today. I have to baby the left shoulder a little which sucks but I increased numbers all across the board for the most part. I felt strong the whole way through which is maybe due to the good breakfast I had packed with protein and SLOW-carbs (ask TotaLiving about that whole SLOW carb bit). Definitely important to fuel up right for these resistance days.
I am making steady improvements on the ab ripper as today was the 5th round of that nonsense. Went from 50% to 80% in no time so I should be back to 100% by the end of the first phase fo sho'!!!
Brando freaked me out with a link he sent me last night about P90X2... At this point I am not looking forward to that madness. At all.

Day 9...Plyometrics WEEK 2
Plyometrics...or jump training...yadda yadda yadda...
It took all I had to press play today. After a long 8+ hours on the road, the last thing I wanted to do was an hour of cardio.
But I pulled on my socks and laced up my shoes and charged it! It was a good workout too. I improved over last week which is a good sign coming off of yesterday's unfortunate fiasco. I went from being so drained to feeling great. I have to remind myself how good I feel after I workout because sometimes i just don't want to press play at all. I am only 9 days in and i know there will be countless days ahead that I will be over it. I think that is the problem with most people and working out. It's so easy to put it off, especially after a long day.
I guess if I had one bit of advice about exercise it would be: You'll never feel better as you do after a good honest workout.
I just need to make sure I remember that myself.
209.1 (whoa, a little heavier today...that's odd)

Day 8...Chest and Back WEEK 2
Great news! I'm a total puss.
It was a bad idea to look at my old log sheets. I mean, I feel like I am working hard, but I am seriously only capable of a small fraction of what I was doing before. Whatever happens in the future, I can't drop out like I did ever again. I can barely look at myself in the mirror...and no, its not because I barely fit in the mirror.
I feel so heavy. Pull ups seemed to get harder from last week. I'm going backwards!!! NOOOOO!!!!!
Small measureable improvements were made however in the AbRipper department. A healthy person would focus on the positive so that's what I am going to do too. Act as if, right?

Day 6... KenpoX
Here we are....Saturday already. One full week in the bag...and the hardest week I should say. It's all down hill from here. LOL. Or not.
Kenpo is a great way to start the weekend. Gets your heart rate up and ready to go. I enjoyed an ice cold recovery drink afterwards and now I am walking on sunshine!
Soreness factor is diminishing quickly. Even after yesterday's leg workout, I am very much mobile with no pains.
Not much to report here and I am also in a hurry...going to drive a formula 1 car today. If this is my last blog you now know why.

Day 5...Legs and Back
Really? Day five already? Shucks, I'm almost done with week one already. That's fricken' awesome dude!
Woke up this morning and didn't feel as sore as I had for the past couple days. I think that yoga routine worked it out. I'm not saying I am not sore...just not in the agonizing pain I was in for the previous 72 hours.
So today was the dreaded legs and back day. I only say dreaded because I have never been a fan of working out my legs. The upside is that the back portion of this routine is ALL pull-ups which is my favorite exercise. When I finished up P90 last time I could do 14 pull ups fresh and then keep a pretty good rep count the whole rest of the way through completing about 100 pull-ups by the end of the routine and all completely unassisted. To me that's bad ass. I was in a little competition with Brando in this department and he ended up squeaking by and surpassing me which is fine because I am used to it by now with that little whipper snapper...besides it helped push me, so I kinda won too. Thanks big brous!
Here's the shotty part. While I have been out taste testing every taco stand in San Diego county, Brando has been keeping a decent grip on the big P to the Nine. Nothing crazy, but even halfway keeps you well primed as he is even now, while really dogging it, ripping out a sweet 16 pull ups to my eight! I'm not even gonna blame my broken finger for falling off so bad in the pull up count. I mean, it's my pinky finger for Pete's sake. I primarily blame my fat ass, and bowl of jell-o disguised as a stomach.
I already mentioned the other day that my legs have maintained some strength and that was evident again today so whatever.
What I am putting out there is that the pull-up challenge is back on. I have to dig myself out of a hole, but Brandon has to pretty much build a house so I'll call it even ground. I'll be at 16 come Christmas. As a matter of fact that is what I will be giving myself for Christmas this year. 16 pull-ups fresh.
Home ownership is a bitch Brando.
...btw, I forgot to weigh myself today. Dang.

Day 4...Yoga X
I wasn't sure how exactly I was going to be able to persevere through a ninety minute Yoga routine being in the shape I was this morning when I woke up. I barely was able to get out of bed and stand up. This soreness is unbearable!
The short version is, I persevered but it was not pretty.
The stretching was good for my war torn muscles. It had to be, because after the initial agony, they really started to feel loose and warm and usable. But those poses just didn't come easy! Even throwing in the simple pushup between the down and up dog was a struggle.
I sure lost some good and needed stamina, and flexibility (which is also affected by the extra handful grab all around my waist).
I remember the first time I did the Yoga routine I thought it was going to be just a bunch of stretching and breathing. But then I got my ass kicked royally.
The only difference between that time and this time was that this time around...I saw it coming.

Day 3...Arms and Bbbbbback! ...aaaand AbRipper.
Oh Jeeeez....I was so damn sore last night I couldn't sleep! Tossed and turned all night which was just agonizing. I'm talking head to toe sore! This first week is going to suck, especially because only today I brought my arms and shoulders in for the fun. So what do I have to look forward to in the immediate future?
1) Another crap nights rest.
2) The loss of use of my arms tomorrow.
I think it makes a whole lot of sense to take it mild the first week to avoid feeling like a piece of shredded carnitas. The thing is, Tony H does not really let you do that. I appreciate the good motivation and all, but walking around like a disabled elderly man all day and writhing around on my mattress for hours on end is no fun at all.
All the curls and presses today were actually taxing on my broken finger pretty good. Not sure if I did myself any favors in that department. My left shoulder is not feeling awesome either, but I'll work it out folks. Don't worry one bit.
I forgot to post weight yesterday, and today I forgot to weigh myself until after I ate a big omelette and massive Jack Lalane juice.
I just need to remember to weigh myself immediately upon waking up and then I will record the weight daily.
Love my new rubber floor. The garage gym is good stuff.
3 down...87 to go.

Day 2...Plyometrics...THE MOTHER!
Well, at least that's what Tony H says. Fact is, there is some validity to that. Fact is, it has always been the one routine that I looked forward to the least. Fact is, that is because I really sucked at it.
Quick little back story...
Never being the most cardio proficient individual, on my first whack at P90X, I had to slowly work my way up to being able to hang with the kids on the Plyo DVD...and after many struggling sessions, low and behold for the last phase of P90X I was killing it 100% and actually looked forward to the Plyo day. How about that?!
So today was the first time back doing the old Plyo. After yesterday's disappointing reality check I wasn't exactly rolling into Plyo waving the battle flag high. But "Play" I pressed and I quickly got right into the swing of things. My legs were instantly feeling challenged but not in the way they did the first time around. More so they were just rudely awakened. Makes sense. I haven't exactly asked them to do jack for the last six months.
Today I asked them to Jack...and after a bit of resistance, I got them going pretty darn good. If I had to estimate how well I did against Tony and the kids, I would say I was at 80%. That's pretty good!! I mean, I'll take it! And I am really surprised at the strength and endurance I maintained in my legs over the course of the looooong summer off.
I am predicting a full Plyo recovery by the end of Phase 1.
I'm pretty excited about that.
We shall see.

DAY 1...Chest and Back with a little AbRipper for good measure....
Wow.
Totally humbled.
I really forgot the intensity involved in this workout. Maybe I am a novice at this point.
Six months off is not a good idea. I know what I was capable of at the end of the program last time and now I feel like a knucklehead trying to put together something that resembles an actual "set".
I am operating at about 50% here. Now I must say that I do have a broken finger which is making pull-ups a bit more difficult, but I am still soft like Charmin. No excuses...just time to face reality.
I am recording my weight daily and my workouts. I will post my reps etc. At the end of the first phase so hopefully one can see a nice initial progression.
I'll post weight daily.
This morning 211.1 lbs.
At least I don't need a belt anymore.
Love,
Jonny Chubb

I'm BAAACK...in the saddle again....
I'm not a novice at this point. I believe I have completed the P90X program 3 times now. The last time I finished was just about 6 months ago, so The beginning of April 2011.
In April I moved south of the border. No, no, no...I dont live in Mexico. I moved south of the Orange County/San Diego county line. Yeah, I know what's the diff? Not sure yet but anyway...
After a pretty irresponsible 6 months of chorizo burritos, all the chips and salsa I could dream of, numerous orders of Carne Asada fries, california burritos, chicken burritos, double beef burrito combo plates (FYI, these beans in these combo plates have about all the LARD you would expect and there is no shame in their game), cheesesteaks, pizzas, hot wings (NOTE: One hot wing challenge won, one hot wings challenge failed...but I'll be back), and toward the end even a 4x4 Animal style just to go out with a bang. Typically all of this fare would be washed down with a strawberry shake or refreshing Mexican cerveza.
Not much exercise to balance out the above carnival of nonsense during this time either. Oh, and that reminds me...I did attend a couple carnivals or fairs but the details of those outings intake can pretty much be arrived at without much imagination.
So here I am today. Round four of P90X commencing...but this time is a bit more daunting. You see, I have ordered the p90x2 program which will be delved around Christmas time and my commitment is to run through the first p90x and roll right into version 2.0. So we are talking 6 months of pretty good training.
I have managed to recover 15 pounds of more or less BS since I concluded p90x. I was surprised it was not more considering the abundance of sludge I managed to power down. I think my metabolism was jump started pretty good from my P90x days and carried on for a while allowing me to process the aforementioned onslaught with remarkable efficiency. Only over the last couple months did I really notice a physical difference in the way I felt, looked, and moved.
I didn't mean to, but I let myself down. I seriously launched a nuclear carbo-fat attack on myself. However, the most delicious nuclear carbo-fat attack I have ever experienced. That had to be said.
The fun is over. The nonsense ends now. I apologize to all the taco stands and pizza joints that will have a much softer 4th quarter without my patronage.
Time to press play again.
