Day 66...Yoga X

What's up Dog? I'll tell you what's up? Warrior III is what's up. I can do this pose now. For the first time. Yeah Buddy! I even was able to bust out the standing splits pretty well too...and the Half Moon. Twisting Half Moon not so much but give me another week or two and I will have this routine all cleaned up and dialed in.

Progress is a beautiful thing. I am loving this week! Weigh in's Friday morning...will it be a sub 200 for the books???? Tune in tonight to find out!!

Day 65...Shoulders and Arms

It's the glamour muscles everyone!

"You know 25 years ago I would never where a tank top but now that I work out my Shoulders and Arms I wear them all the time." - Tony Horton

This is a Shoulders, Bi, Tri rotation...so you basically just roll through an exercise for each muscle group over and over again until you can't hold your toothbrush up to your face.

This week has been really cool in that it is the first time in a month or more that I have done some of these routines so I am really seeing how far I have come from the beginning.

Makes for good motivation down the home stretch.

: )

Day 64...Plyometrics...is your friend.

It's the mother of all P90X exercises!!!!

Here is what I know now:

- Plyo is still challenging.
- My legs are in fact stronger and I can do the exercises with hardly any variation if any at all.
- I don't peter out at the end.
- Even though I have improved and can see it, I can't bring it like Frog Boy Dominic yet. That guy is gnarly.
- Plyo is not my favorite routine.
- Brandon is insane to think I am going to do the "Insanity Plyo" routine.

Shaka Kahn!

I don't know why I wrote that.

Day 63...Chest and Back

First time on this routine in a long time. I am on the final stretch here. The next four weeks alternate between the first training block and the second training block.

I forgot how many push ups you have to do on this one! Plus it is the Round1/Round2 approach where Tony says to pace yourself in round 1 and bring it in round 2. Brandon decided, and I agreed that it's best to just come out of the gates full on so that is what I did.

So how do I compare this time with the first time I did this routine? Well I am definitely stronger and have more stamina than 63 days ago. I am not a freak like Tony yet but I definitely see some good improvement.

Plyo tonight!

Day 62...Rest Day. Oh, I can do this...

Well...back on schedule. Rested up on Sunday just as I was supposed to. Atta boy!

What about doubling up Core Synergistics and Yoga X? Oh man, that was just so I would feel better about myself on Saturday. Even though all I had to do was push play and I would have been off to the races, I gave into my inner pansy and did nothing.

Seriously though...I HAVE TO STAY ON MY STRICT SCHEDULE, PERIOD!

I have four more weeks (plus a couple IOU's now) that I need to finish off strong. Even though after that I fully intend on continuing the program, I will allow a non-scheduled day off here and there so that I may possibly establish some sort of a social life again. But for now I have to put my nose to the grindstone.

By the way, I snuck in a weigh-in this weekend and I actually was 199.4! I should have no problem posting a sub 200 number for Friday's official weigh-in.

Day 61...Yoga X, right?

Wrong. Here's a good excuse:

I woke up tired from being out late...had to go to SD. Idea was to come home and rollinto some Yoga and chill out the rest of the evening. you know big day the next day with Daylight Savings and stuff.

I was shooting to be home at about 3 or 4. Wrong. Try 5:30...then I had to sit at my desk until 8 p.m. I know...what the hell, right? YOU PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND THE KIND OF PRESSURE I AM UNDER!!!!

Since I sluffed off P90X for 2 days in a row I thought I would reward myself with some Pineapple Curry Chicken from Thai Mama. Yeah man, I am a ROCK!!!

I can just do double duty on Sunday. Clean slate. Even it up with the T-Man...

Day 60...Core Synergistics, but...

I actually didn't have time to do it. Idea was to rest day today and pick it up on Sunday.

I had evening plans and didn't get back from SD early enough to rock my P90X.

Sucky I know...but I weighed in at 201.6 which is a lousy post just as this post is a lousy post.

It get's worse...

Day 59...Kenpo X...(Supposed to be X Stretch)

So it's Thursday. Of course the Thursday that I set myself up for a good rollicking aggro Kenpo X session I am not pissed off. Go figure. Anyway, since I really wanted to hit Kenpo X hard I just proceeded to call a bunch of agents until I could find one I could pick a fight with and get riled up.

OK. Now that I am ramped up and good and pissed off (not to mention hopped up on a 5-hour energy) I proceed with Kenpo X. I came out of the gates fast and thought I was cramping up for a sec after about 15 minutes or right before the knee kicks (I totally got a cramp at this point once before which sucked) but it was a false alarm.

I drummed up an awesome sweat, and just as Tony was describing during the cooldown how a bead of sweat rolled down his forehead and off the tip off his nose, the same bead of sweat rolled off of my forehead and off the tip of my nose. This is actually the second time I noticed that occurrence happen just as Tony described it which tells me I am doing this routine up!!!!!!!

Does the sweat roll off the tip of your nose after Kenpo X my devoted readership???

If not, you need to ask yourself what the hell you just did for an hour.

Weigh-ins on Friday...202 last week. What's in store tomorrow??

Day 58...X Stretch...(supposed to be Kenpo X)

Hey man...I can switch things up a little bit once in a while. Yeah huh! Brando said so.

I didn't get around to P90 time until 8 p.m. yesterday so I thought that rolling into an hour long Cardio workout would wire me til the wee hours...I decided the less intense Thursday routine would be a better fit...ALSO...since Thursday's seem to be my grouchy, pissed off days, putting Kenpo X in the Thursday slot made some sense too.

I can't write much about X Stretch that I have not written before. I like X Stretch. I think X Stretch feels great. Am I X-static about it? You may X-spect me to be. Am I an X-spert at it? Well if I X-cel the most in one routine, it is this one.

Day 57...CORE SYNERGISTICS

First of all, I noticed something new on my blog (stupid word man, I really hate it) page. I have two followers! Yes, there are two people that are very possibly reading my each and every post. One is my sister which doesn't surprise me because she is good like that. The other is a complete stranger which is cool because there is no shred of obligation for this person to actually be a follower of my blog.

Now, I have been thinking about why somebody who doesn't know me at all would follow my blog and I have come up with a few options:

1. They think I am somebody else and are on board by mistake,

2. They heard about the miracles that have been occuring on Goldenspring and must know more or,

3. They are going for the Guinness Book of World Records for most blogs followed.

I am pretty sure it is #3. But no matter the reason, thanks for being here BlondeMusic. I mean, I like blonde's and I like music so you must be cool.

So how did today go?

Great! I like Core Synergistics. Within 10 minutes I have a good sweat going and it don't quit until the very end! Careful though, this routine is easy to "Dog", but if you lay it all out it's a sweeeeet one and you definitely get what you give.

Bell boy...did you "Dog it"? You better not have!!

Day 56...Yoga X Ya'll!

Dang man...already another recovery week! I almost didn't make the change.

So it was Yoga tonight and guess what? Cliffy hung around for it this time so I had a little company for chataranga madness! I think he liked the routine...he usually does the "Yoga for Surfers" program so the whole Yoga thing wasn't new to him as it was for me.

I am kinda torn about these recovery weeks. Sure I get my workout in, but it is definitely light on the intensity in comparison to the regular weeks and I have gotten to the point where I like to get a good sweat cooked up. The Core Synergistics is a pretty good routine though, I have to point that out.

By the way, last weeks weigh-in had me at 202 lbs. Getting closer to sub 200 party people!

I think once I hit 199 I am taking everyone out to eat at The Hat for Pastrami Sandwiches and Gravy Fries. RIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

Monday, March 8, 2010

Day 55...Rest Day...right in the nick of time.

It went like this:

Woke up. Yawned. Stretched my arms over my head. Reported to the garoffice and worked until noon. Domestic duties and errands followed. A few beers over lunch with the fellas. Back home. Couch...

...whoa, it's Monday morning already?

Day 54...Kenpo X

...Dang man! Legs are worked today just as I anticipated.

Kenpo is a good, fun routine but it felt like I was wearing concrete shoes. I swear my kicks were a chore and didn't feel or look very good. Still able to work up a good sweat and get that heart rate hoppin' so that's good.

Walking back upstairs to shower was wobbly.

Sunday rest day will be welcomed with open arms.

Day 53...Legs and Back

I swear P90X is all about destroying your legs!

Think about it. Plyo kills them...then Yoga sets them on fire...then when you get to Friday, they are all but obliterated. Oh yeah, then Kenpo the next day, while it does not exactly kill your legs it does remind you that they are dead.

If it wasn't for the Back routines mixed in with Legs I would just die. I am all about doing a few pull ups if only to let my poor legs take a moments rest.

I report that I have been constantly sore (and big time at that) all week long.

All I need to do is be able to stand up tomorrow and do my Kenpo.

Friday, March 5, 2010

Day 52...Yoga X. And a pissed off one at that.

I don't know what it is about Thursday's but it seems lately all the sh!t hits the fan that day and by the time I get home I am ON FIRE and madder than a hornet.

I am not going to begin to explain all the BS that occurred throughout the day as that is not the point of this Blog (Blog is a stupid word by the way).

I just thought it funny how on Yoga days when I am supposed to be all calm and clear of mind and focusing on my breathing and such I end up getting so ramped up.

Anyway, I do well with this Yoga routine and while I wouldn't say I improved over the last run through, I didn't do any worse. I was not as stable during some of the balance routines but I think that is because I was not clear of mind. I would actually get mad if I fell out of a position and on one occasion I even yelled the F-word out of frustration because I could not get settled in a particular balance posture. I found that amusing. Total contradiction going on here with an angry guy doing yoga.

I actually lightened up after that.

For the record, I am super sore from head to toe right now. My legs are still hurting from Plyo on Tuesday. Back and Legs this eve is going to be rough.

Happy Birthday Hilary!

Day 52...Back and Biceps. The Glamour muscles...ooh lala...

I was thinking that some of you folks may be wondering where the magic happens. Well here is the venue:

Here is the P90X secret:

Once you get to the point where you feel that you can't possibly do another rep or last another second...you bang out a few more and hold on for a few more. That's it! How easy is that?

Dude. Not as easy as it sounds turns out. For instance take today's Back and Bi routine. I rolled into this one feeling pretty confident since I had two back to back awesome days under my belt this week. I was thinking that I turned a corner and was really stepping up to the plate at last. Well let me tell you this... corn cob pull-ups are a humbling thing even if you have Nebraska blood pumping through your veins. Fact is, I can't even do one unassisted. Oh, are you judging me? Give it a shot yourself then Mr. Jack Lalane cool guy fitness man!

Secondly, have you ever done so many curls that you can't feel your arms anymore and you just wonder what is making them still move? This bicep routine shoves sooo many curls down your throat that you would never on your own think to do such a thing to yourself. I am not looking forward to the pain I am going to have tomorrow in the inside of my elbows. Thank goodness my Recovery Drink Mix is in transit.
So that's the secret...basically just kick your own ass on a daily basis (but only for like an hour) and the results will blow you away.
Word.

Day 51...Plyo. SO good to be back in the saddle...

I am back in full swing folks. If you want to know what I was up to all last week, the posts are there. "Astrix Week" is what it is called and it is pretty much just a bunch of excuse making, rationalizing, and venting more or less. Unless you are completely bored I wouldn't even bother reading Astrix week.

But today was Plyo and it was great! Not 100% on par with Tony and the kids but I am sure getting there. I was a little unsure about how it was going to go since I was off the program for a week but it was my best showing yet! I am persevering through some of the moves when before I had to stop because my legs had nothing left. For instance, the "Run Stance-Jump-Switch 180-Whatever-the-Hell sets your legs on fire but I made it through despite the agony, which was a first.

Here is a mid-program update for ya'll:

I am halfway through the P90X program. I was not able to stick to the program while away on my "vacation" last week which really bummed me out, however, halfway through the program I have dropped 15.7 lbs. From 219.3 to 203.6. That's pretty good. These results are much better than I had expected. I am noticeably more limber, Ab Ripper X is not as disastrous, endurance improved, strength is... well, strengthier, and my eating habits have gotten SO much better. I have not been to a drivethru window or fast food establishment since 2009 and have no desire to either.

All good things.

Day 50...Chest, Shoulders, Arms...Back to legitimacy.

So now that we have made it through Astrix week, I am happy to be back in the groove again.

It felt like a million bucks to run through a legit P90X routine with Tony crackin' the whip. Workout went well and as I am writing this the following morning, I am feeling a good soreness which confirms to me that I did a good job with the chest, shoulders, and arms routine.

Oh, and here's something to be stoked about...Ab Ripper X was pretty doable! Definitely my best showing on this bad boy yet!

Only thing is I still can't quite do reverse bicycle. Pfiefer scissors are tough to do the whole 25 too.

Now all I have to do it get my Plyo DVD out of the damn laptop for tonight.

Day 49*...Sunday Funday. How dare you?!

I am still so very tired.

Me and Hilary rocked it out at Bon Jovi Saturday night so I was up late. I am so totally out of whack from my usual schedule which had been set like clock work for the last month and a half. Go to bed at 10...wake at 6...work all day...P90X sometime between 5 and 8...have a little dinner...work a little more...back to bed by 10. It's perfect. Or it was.

Just can't wait to get back in the groove. Astrix week is officially over and I am glad!

Monday I am back.

Day 48*...Is Astrix week over yet?

I am so sore!!!

That wipeout on Thursday jacked "my neck and my back"! (Some of you folks may get the reference there and be amused.)

Cliffy helped me move a bunch of junk from my yard this morning. I just want to go back to sleep. Still so wiped out. Not only did I do nothing good for my body today, but I had a plate of Bacon, Eggs and Pancakes at the Brigg.

Dude...snap out of it already! Astrix week SUCKS!!!!!!!!

Day 47*...Drive X.

I drove home from Tahoe today. Got stuck in crap traffic in LA FOREVER! Got home a little after 6 p.m. and rolled right into the garoffice and back to the normal Friday night grind.

Did nothing good for my body today.

At all.

So tired.

Day 46*...Snowboard X. See Day 44 pretty much.

EXCEPT...today was bluebird skies and about a foot or so of fresh snow!! Sweeet.

I was pretty stoked to make some tree runs and make some fresh tracks in the snow. You know, I didn't go to Tahoe or even ride at all last year so it had been a while since I had felt the sensation one gets from floating over fresh powder. It's just so good. It's a favorite thing I have decided.

I was on a high for sure! I spanned the mountain from the Nevada side to the California side with the Red Hot Chili Peppers filling my ears. I was in my own world, and since I was riding by myself I didn't really have anyone to share my complete contentment with. I rationalized that I would rather have nobody to share my happiness with and be happy, than have to deal with the possibility of riding with somebody complaining, lagging, or being a Debbie Downer and squashing my delight.

Just saying.

Ultimately I ate a rather big plate of sh!t and decided after a good four hours my legs couldn't take it anymore and I called it a day.

I called it a damn good day.

Day 45*...Snow Storm X

This is where this week comes all undone.

Woke up to a decent snow storm. Minimal visibility and an overwhelming sense of wanting to be lazy and sit my the fire with a Kahlua drink.

Whenever I come up to Lake Tahoe I look forward to a good snow storm, being stuck inside, and just watching the white stuff fall. So besides minding my email and relentlessly ringing phone, I TOOK IT EASY BIG TIME TODAY.

It was good.

Don't judge.

Day 44*...Snowboard X (supposed to be Plyo)

...and it would have been plyo quite possibly if two things came to pass:

1. My new laptop didn't take my PLyo DVD hostage and,

2. I wasn't shy about jumping around in public (This wasn't always a problem mind you.)

So instead I made my time on the mountain work. I call it Top-to-Bottom-Deep-Knee-Non-Stop-Speed-Runs. Basically you just find the longest continuous run and hit it from top to bottom as fast as possible but making constant turns in a deep bent knee position. Now I am not sure how long some of the runs I took were but my quads were on FIRE well before reaching the bottom and out right shaking by the time I made it to the chair.

Painful yet 100% exhilarating. Long rests on the lift back up gave me plenty of recovery time which is what you do not get with the Plyo X workout.

So that was my improvised workout for today. Lame but true. Still had fun though.

Monday, February 22, 2010

Day 43*...Chest, Shoulders, Triceps...as recalled by me.

OK...It was not bad. This one is pretty easy to remember as I remember all the Tricep exercises, and shoulders too. I also remembered that this is basically a push up fest. That's not good though, because after a few exercises I am doing girly push-ups and I just can't bring myself to do those in public.

So how did I change this routine up and how did I keep it the same? Well I threw in a bunch of machine work and free weights for chest and then rolled out as many of the tri and shoulder exercises I could recall which I think I hit close to all the tri and a good amount of the shoulders.

Oh and check me out...I busted out Ab Ripper X. I totally have that routine burned into my skull. I did omit backwards bicycle and the long version on mason twist only because I feel like I look like a mentally disturbed person when I do them.

Sorry, I am still a little self conscious even in my 30's.

Anyway, I kept my heart rate up...I found the burn on each exercise and accidentally made loud grunting workout noises several times and you know I wouldn't do that in public unless I couldn't help it.

Tomorrow...it's supposed to be plyo...what do I do?????????/

Day 42*... Sunday Funday but not.

Astrix day #2.

Still annoyed and bummed about my plan and vision not working out.

Woke up SUPER STIFF BACK. Couldn't even touch my toes. Thinking ahead to Monday and snowboarding, I decided will just do Stretch X. Minor workout...kind of a cop out really, but it is one routine that I can stay put and don't need to hear anything and only have to adjust the screen a few times to be able to see the picture.

Despite being a totally mellow routine it felt good. An hour of stretching got my blood flowing, my muscles warm, I worked out the stiffness in my back and was really feeling rejuvenated. I decided to go down for a massage afterward to really get my back feeling 100%. Good call.

What am I going to put together tomorrow though?

Day 41*...Kenpo X...wait... DAMN YOU TECHNOLOGY!!!!

So bummed.

I had it all planned out. Back up plans and everything.

So here I am in Lake Tahoe. Usually a fun filled and relaxing week in the snow. Now I knew this year was not going to be relaxing because I was planning on working while up here. Totally fine with it. Actually, I couldn't relax if I wasn't working because that is how it is these days.

I brought my P90X with me so I wouldn't miss so much as a beat. I love P90X. It's like my binkie if I was a baby. I miss it after my one rest day so I couldn't imagine a week without it. There is a pretty good gym here at the Ridge so I was going to set up my little area and play my DVD's on one of the 3 laptops I brought. See? Back up plan.

Well here's the bite...one of my laptops has locked up and I can't do a damn thing to fix it and my other one I can only see the screen at a perfect angle and the sound is waaaaaay toooo low. I can't hear squat! The third laptop does not play DVD's...I just brought it for email and interet.

Anyway, bottom line is I can't play my DVD's. After over an hour of trying to get something going I have no luck.

Now I have to put my past 6 weeks of P90X training to the test. What do I remember and can I create a comparable workout with what I have learned?

I could have done Kenpo by heart just about except that I was a little self conscious about having a bunch of people watch me shadow box in the corner. Instead I replaced Kenpo with a pretty good Back/Shoulders/Legs routine. Yes, I backed it off the legs compared to what Tony would have like to see but I smashed my back big time as it is more sore than any of the previous back sessions.

Going forward I am going to call this the ***Astrix week***. I am going to assemble my best P90X workouts for each day as best as I can. It sucks. I'm not happy about it. I wish I was back in my P90X room at home where everything works and is familiar.

I'm never going away again.

Day 40...Should be Back and Legs but is instead an improvised Rest Day.

Up late Thursday night and up early Friday morning trying to nail the lid down on a million things before I embark on the eight hour drive to Lake Tahoe. It was going to be impossible to fit in 75 minutes of anything today so I had to make Friday my Sunday. No slacking...just switching.

So my "Rest Day" was really anything but. Up before the sun, scrambling to hit the road at a decent hour...and then after a few failed attempts at leaving I finally cut the cord and make my departure only three and a half hours behind schedule.

On the phone for about half the drive I finally get to "no man's land" for cell phones. That was nice.

Anyway, I pull into Tahoe at about 9:00 and slide right into a cold pitcher of Stella and some hot wings. Just like I would on a regular Sunday Funday.

Friday, February 19, 2010

Day 39...Yoga X. Again. Same thing. Still.

Man...repetition.

At this point I got this routine about 80% dialed. Warrior III is now doable for me. Still can't quite pull off the half moon or standing splits but we will get there.

Awww....short and sweet today.

Gotta bolt!

Day 38...Back and Biceps. Round 2

Good workout...but seriously, Corn Cob Pull-ups? 100% fresh I can maybe do 1 or 2 of these nasty buggers. Towel pull-ups are not much better but maybe this one is tough for me just because of the newness factor. Corn Cobs are straight up gnarly, period.

I guess a good Bicep workout entails a massive amount of curls. My lordy, by the end of this thing your grip is so tired you can hardly hold onto your fingers!

My fuller set of dumbbells allowed for a more effective run through this routine this week as I am learning to chose the proper weights for the amount of reps I need to do. Good stuff.

How about that Ab Ripper X? Meghan said that it would take a month to see some improvement and she was about right. This week I have actually been noticing said improvement. Granted, reverse bicycle is still a mystery to me.

Tuesday, February 16, 2010

Day 37...Plyo...to the 5th power.

Dude...that SUCKED!!!!!

Fearing that I was malnourished today and would likely "bonk" I had can of tuna (no, not the chunk-light crap...solid white albacore is the only way to go. Chunk light belongs with cream-corn in the orphanage. Sorry T, I will always be out on cream-corn.) and some water crackers to put a little fuel in the engine. I fully remembered Tony emphasizing NOT TO EAT AT LEEEAST AN HOUR BEFORE DOING PLYO. So I waited an hour and a half. That should be good right?

THE MOST UNCOMFORTABLE HOUR OF P90X EVER!!!!! I would have rather done Ab Ripper X for a solid hour. What Tony should have said is, if you eat within 3 hours before plyo make sure it is a few orange wedges and a handful of almonds and that's it!!!

I so wanted to skip the "Sports Bonus", but I hung in there and finished it out. Sure I had to adopt some of the adjustments, but I motored through just below their pace which is normal for me now.

I just wasn't a happy camper is all.

Lesson learned.

Monday, February 15, 2010

Day 36...Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps. Duece.

Second run through this beauty workout...I was excited to get to P90X today. Rest days are great, but I really like my routine I got going here...and even though Ab Ripper still challenges me...once I get the end it's just awesome.

So last week I filled in my dumbbell collection so I was really able to hit today's exercises with the appropriate weights. Huge difference in overall quality. I'm pleased.

Floor flys are gnarly as are the Two speed twitch whatever push-ups. Rock these bad boys to failure and then get on your knees and burn it out girly style.

You work hard with this routine but I don't get the sweat going like all the other days. The tempo is just a little slower I suppose...even though I skipped over the little breaks (Brando trick).

Low and behold though...actually noticed a little improvement with Ab Ripper X. Key word is little, but heck, I'll take it!!!!

Day 35...Rest. But not really.

Spent the whole weekend working on the garoffice. Amazing how much crap compiles around here. Made a ton of progress and by midweek should have a respectable psuedo- office environment. Come drop on by sometime. We'd love to have ya!

So you want to know what enjoyed for my cheat day??? I enjoyed a few cold Coronas, plenty of chips and salsa, and a baddie I have not had in a while...my all time favorite Oreo cookies!

I forgot how good those things are.

Here's a new feeling I have felt for the first time...I actually missed doing working out today. By the end of the day it felt as if I had not done P90X for a week. Weird.

Day 34...Kenpo X... Yes Sinsei!!

Fear does not exist in this Dojo, does it?! No Sinsei!

Pain does not exist in this Dojo, does it?! No Sinsei!

What is your problem Mr. Lawrence?

Classic Karate Kid scene...thought it was appropriate.

This is what I say: Yoga, then Legs, then rolling into Kenpo X makes kicking much harder than it should be. I must have burned my legs up the night before because it felt like I was wearing lead shoes! Always a great way to end a P90X week though.

Sianara.

Saturday, February 13, 2010

Day 33...Legs and Back in Technicolor!

Let's get right to it...

Legs and Back is 50% tough for me and 50% good for me. I hate working out my legs because they are my weakness, I love working out my back because I love pull-ups and it feels oh so good!

One legged wall squats...forget it. I struggle with two legged wall squats. Wide grip pull ups... the bomb! I'd do these all day if I could.

Ab Ripper still blows. Reverse bicycle with your hands in the air??? There is absolutely no damn way, and those guys are just cruising it like nothing. That's annoying. One part that I do have a sense of humor about is the very last exercise, the Mason Twist. Man, I must look so ridiculous working that one out. I am falling over from side to side and squirming in pain...It sucks doing it but I am laughing at myself inside.

Sophia in color is good btw.

Thursday, February 11, 2010

Day 32...Yoga X. Ommmmmmmmmm....

First off...rolling into my P90X session this evening I was feeling completely irritated. I would have much preferred Kenpo X today. I think that would have helped a whole lot better than a Yoga routine since I am still a little bent out of shape. (No pun intended. At all. Seriously. Not in a joking mood in the least bit.)

Anyway, just for posting sake, I am pretty much at a plateau as far as Yoga X is concerned. Just like last week I do fairly well until the Warrior III's and Twisting Half Moons and Standing Splits. I just can't balance them and my legs won't get straight. I know these guys have been at this for a while but it still amazes me how they hold some of these poses so well.

I guess I have something to continually strive for.

Here's a bright spot to my day (which is so lame but it's all I got so shut it!)...Legs and Back is tomorrow so I get to see the lovely Sophia for the first time in 2 weeks AND for the first time ever in COLOR. I am actually looking forward to this.

So tomorrow is another day so I am going to slam the door on this one and start anew manana.

Day 31...Back and Biceps. First run.

Is there such a thing as too many curls?

If you are Nicole Kidman or Tony Horton you do not think so.

Anyway, late night working last night so I am posting this morning...and it is going to be short and sweet.

Tuesday's Plyo has caught up with me. Last night's Back and Bicep + Ab Ripper is already taking it's toll. I may not be able to type or make use of opposing digits soon so I have to get all this stuff out of the way quick.

Yoga ought to feel good tonight...I hope.

Either way, I am blasted.

Day 30...Plyo. 4th pass at this baby!

"Man'o manechevitz, as my uncle used to say!"

Eyes are burning from drowning in sweat? Legs crippled with fatigue? Lungs are near suffocated as they just can't seem to get enough oxygen to the rest of the body?

Good job then!

I gotta tell you, I was getting squirley on this one towards the end. If somebody was watching me they would have thought I was drunk. I'm really trying to push myself harder at this point but in doing so I think my form is suffering. Now on Plyo, since it is more cardio and jumping around I don't think the form thing is as crucial as say, the resistance exercises, but nevertheless I noticed some flailing going on...I don't know, what do you think?

While I do look forward to doing P90X each day, I should tell you that I look forward to finishing P90X each day much more. I don't want anybody to get the wrong idea. It's hard work and is not comfortable in the slightest. But it fires me up and I feel like a million bucks afterward. It's totally worth an hour of an ass kicking.

Wednesday we got a new routine again: Back and Biceps. Sweeeet. You think Sophia will be in the group??? She's got nice back...I mean a nice back.

Day 29...Chest, Shoulders, and Triceps. The Maiden Voyage

We have arrived. Training Block 2.

First out of the gate is the chest, shoulders, & triceps routine. Many push-ups and new variations of which once again, resulted in me crashing into the floor face first for yet another rug sandwich. I thought that push-ups were going to be my strong suit, after all, in 2008 I did over 50,000 of them (Some of you may remember the great push-up campaign of 2008).

Turns out if you don't use it you lose it.

Anyway, this being Training Block 2 and all, I really upped the ante. Each exercise was done to failure or nausea. Is that good or bad? I don't know but I got to wondering if I would have full use of my upper body today. I do.

Overall, good routine. I need to get 10 and 15 lbs dumbbells though because the bands just don't quite cut it for me on certain exercises...and 25's...well, I'm not there yet.

Ab Ripper X: So we meet again.
Me: Yes, Long time no see old friend.
Ab Ripper X: So you think your Kung Fu is pretty good, huh?
Me: I want to fight your brother...him against me.
Ab Ripper X: No, you will fight me. Let's Kung Fu!

And so it goes... just like many times before, I was left writhing in pain on the floor as Ab Ripper X faded to black, only to return again on Wednesday when I will be taken to task for the 11th time.

Day 28...Rest. Danger ahead...

Sunday Funday coincides with my P90x rest day. This particular Sunday Funday happened to coincide with the Super Bowl.

Now Super Bowl Sunday to me has turned into somewhat of a Holiday in itself. That said, the "Holiday Season" really spans from late November to Early February. That's a lot of time to max out those belt holes.

It also creates dangerous waters for certain New Years Resolutions, primarily resolutions that have to do with dieting or gambling. While from the get go I declared Sunday would be my "cheat day" I never intended for it to be my "blow out" day. Trust me, as much as I would love to sit around and dip corn dogs in nacho cheese all day, my "cheat" is pretty much a handful of Bud Lights, Hot Wings and Chips.

But this Sunday was to be a little different. My sister organized a pretty damn legit Chili Cook off and I was lucky enough to be tapped as a judge. There were five chillies (sp?) so I automatically had my share of that. (By the way, you should ask Brando for his Seafood Sausage Chile recipe). Outside of the chili, there was a pretty impressive spread of snacks, dips, deserts, cocktails, and finger-foods which were hard to let alone.

Always one to make you feel better about yourself, Brando told me that since I had been eating so well for the last month, my body would reject the junk food and it wouldn't stick to the ribs as I feared. I think there was something to that because after my morning business today, I pretty much floated out the front door like the day before never happened.

So I survived the Super Bowl, and while there was a little more cheating going on that normal, in the end I did not blow it out and derail my program.

And that's that.

Day 27...Yoga X. Again.

I tell you, I got this routine down pretty good until the very last part of the Chataranga part. The Half moon and Warrior III are still too much of a balancing act for me. But you know what? I just do my best and forget the rest (P90X-ism #1).

The big news for today is that I have now completed TRAINING BLOCK #1!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty jazzed about that and I am happy with the results I am seeing. Amazing thing is that I actually look forward to P90X each day, and I have never really been the exercise type.

So on to TRAINING BLOCK #2...wish me luck and sorry for lagging on getting this post up. Saturday ended up being a full day somehow...Sunday too.

Day 26...Core Synergistics STRIKE BACK

...but I was ready this time. Of course I was without some 10 lbs dumbbells which would have been glorious for the lunge kickback curl press, so I was forced to kill myself with 25's.

I totally made arrangements to borrow Brando's but it started raining and I didn't want to have to go all the way over to his house to grab them. So as a punishment for being afraid of the rain, I got brutalized on that particular exercise.

Anyway, this routine flies by. It really does. I think it is an ass kicker because you are using just about all of your muscles at the same time and it gets your heart blasting and the sweat gushing. Now, after the second time through it, I realized that it actually incorporated a few exercises my sister had shown me a couple years ago that she includes in a pretty nifty 20 minute daily workout regimen (if you don't have an hour + to spare each day, I think it would be a good substitute).

SO...Weigh-ins were Friday morning and we got some good news and we got some bad news:

Good news is that nobody got heavier and I made my goal of sub 210 lbs (barely, 209.9 but that counts).

Bad news is that half of the contenders weight loss could be measured in low single digit ounces which as far as I am concerned it totally negligible.

Come on peeps! Step it up! We're doing this for real. No more McD's and Beef Strogganoff. If your wives insist on serving that sh!t up then you need to trade 'em in. If they aren't with you, they are against you! No more dogging it...no more drive thru's (I don't care if you throw away the bun!)...no more sedentary evenings of sloth in from of the boob tube!!! If you are doing P90X and do not cry out in pain at least 3 times during the routine you are wasting your time. If you are not raising your heart rate for at least 20 minutes a day you are failing. Snap out of it already! This is totally cliche, but If I can make this happen so can you! Someone wise once told me it takes 21 days to make something a habit...Work up to that 21 days!!!! The rest will be easy (er). If you want to weigh-in in my garoffice and post your lousy numbers on my white board then you will take the verbal abuse and public ridicule that you deserve. Otherwise erase your name from the board and you can perpetuate your pitiful, portly, pulmonarily pathetic, presence. Harsh? It's called tough love, pansy!

2 lbs a week minimum. You have been warned. No more fad diets, asinine Atkins, or GM short term lameness. Leisurely bike rides are not going to cut it. I don't care if your position is "I ride my bike for fun". That's fine. Have fun, but don't be a pussy about it. We are not 25 years old anymore. Delusions of invincibility and eternal life must be squashed immediately. All of us are just one physical away from some bad news.

Do what you need to do already.

Day 25...X Stretch.

OK. How do I explain this one? Basically, you stretch.

You stretch your neck, your shoulders, your arms, your hands, your chest, your back, your sides, your stomach, your quads, your hamstrings, your calves, your feet...everything. Over the course of an hour.

Not very challenging. Just felt real good. While I am not as flexible as I used to be, I had zero problems with this routine. I can see how it could be a little rough if you are not used to stretching or are normally not very limber.

Anyway, tomorrow is Friday which means weekly weigh-ins. I am going for a sub 210 lbs display. I think some of the contestants are slipping...come on fellas...fire it up!!!!

Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Day 24...Kenpo X V.4.0

Two things I have come to love since beginning the P90X saga:

Kenpo X & My Costco Protein Shakes! (You like that? A little embedded advertising there. I made a nickle today!)

So I got a little side cramp going right before the knee kicks. Thought it was going to mess me up, but nope! I worked right through, and it went away after only a couple minutes.

I am noticing that after a day on the road my P90X time is little more difficult. I made certain to eat throughout the day (made myself a nice little nutritious lunch) and I didn't "bonk" but I noticed it to be a little more exhausting than when Kenpo was on Saturday's.

Here's an entertaining tid-bit...A little brunette with a pretty nice rack hit on me at the gas station today by the way. It's gotta be the P90X I tell ya! Doesn't matter anyway since I have no game. I seriously jumped in my car, locked the door and pretended to be looking for something. Funny thing is I did actually find something.

Hence, I made a nickle today.

Day 23...Yoga X. If you are paying attention...

...I totally goofed it!

Maybe it was the excitement of a new routine or maybe I am just an airhead, but I was actually supposed to do Yoga X yesterday, and Core synergistics today...and guess what? There is no stinkin' plyo this week after all.

Seriously, where does this guy get his information from?

Anyway, come Wednesday I am back in the correct order so don't get all upset like I know you are about to. I am actually glad I got Core Synergistics out of the way yesterday because to me it really was a mule-kick to the rocks if you know what I'm sayin'.

So there is no more confusion this week, here is the remaining schedule (this is more for my benefit than that of my intensely engaged global readership):

Wednesday - Kenpo X
Thursday - X Stretch ("new one" alert!)
Friday - Core Synergistics (oh bloody hell)
Saturday - Yoga X

As far as today's Yoga X workout, I noticed that I am making some big progress with this routine. I am stretching further, balancing better, holding poses longer, and just overall keeping up with the "kids" pretty much. It's not perfect but really a HUGE improvement from last week even. Personally, I am a little surprised with my showing.

Don't worry intensely engaged global readership, come Friday I will be knocked back into the dirt by the C.S. routine and you can laugh at me once more.

Jerks.

Monday, February 1, 2010

Day 22...Core Synergistics. Ooo...something new!

Right about now I am trying to figure out how I got the idea that this was going to be an "easy" or "easier" week. Maybe because it is referred to as the Recovery Week (insert eyeroll here).

Core Synergistics is GNARRRLY. If I could only have one routine out of the whole series to get me in shape, this is the one I would do.

You can "dog it" easily on this one as I suspect many folks do, but if you flex and squeeze and focus on your core muscles like Tony is constantly emphasizing, then you get HAMMERED!

So you know, today was the most I have sweat yet...ever. Just thankful there was no Ab Ripper X piggy backing on this one.

Recovery week my a$$...tomorrow is Plyo.

Sunday, January 31, 2010

Day 21...and on the 7th he rested.

Well, I went for a bike ride. Now I am going to rest. Well, after I get a few errands done, then I will rest. Actually, after I get my laundry done, do bills, and a couple other domestic duties I will most certainly rest...Unless of course I get sucked into the Garoffice.

Whatever.

Monday begins week #4 everybody...routine changes up so there is something new to look forward to.

Almost done with training block #1!!!!!!!!

Day 20...Kempo X The Revenge of Kempo X

Recovered from the legs and back debacle.

Had an early breakfast Saturday...packed with protein and some good ol' Carbs.

Hit up my third round of Kempo X a few hours later and everything went A-OK! Energy was up, kept the heart rate firing, and worked up one helluva sweat.

Still dig the Kempo workout the most. I had a good overall soreness going on but the only real hurt was in the legs. I must have the weakest legs on earth!

So week #3 is done and done. Sunday as you should now know is the rest day. I really don't think I will have a problem with that.

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Day 19...Back and Legs. Who needs 'em!

What a DISASTER!!!!

I totally "bonked" today. Long day on the road and not enough calories to keep me going. I now know what they were talking about regarding getting enough calories in your body each day in order to have the energy required do the workout.

I had two eggs, a bell pepper, a glass of carrot juice, and a protein shake in the morning. A protein bar for lunch with a small bag of carrot sticks, and a vitamin water and zone bar at around 4:00. After my P90X utter breakdown, I had a chicken breast, bell pepper, and a protein shake, then curled up in a ball on my shower floor and wept and shivered for about an hour.

I am supposed to be 3000k calories per day and yesterday added up to about 1670 total, and only about 1100 before P90X.

I did the best I could but the lack of endurance and quality was quite apparent.

The only thing that kept me going was that I got to work out with my girlfriend Sophia who was a huge source of motivation. Yeah, I have a girlfriend. She's super cute and has a kinda geeky thing about her which I love. I guess I never told anybody about her but she is great.

Of course I haven't told her that she is my girlfriend either, however, I will be sure to bring it up when I meet her. So far I only have spent three hours of time with her in black and white.

Wow...this has turned out to be a total loser posting.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Day 18...Yoga X Third time's a Charm!

Chattaronga!

Say it out loud...It's actually a really cool word!

Tony says, "Push up here if you want to, I choose to do one".

Me too buddy! I rocked the push up each time this week. I know you're probley thinking, oh wow a push up... don't knock yourself out Hercules. Well it's not as easy as is sounds ya big jerk! After 45 minutes of Chattaronga and all that hoopla, a single push up can be a tall order.

Anyhoo. I'm proud of my showing today even though most of the latter poses still elude my current abilities. Of course you must realize that Yoga is an ancient art. You ever notice that all the yoga masters and guru's who can do all this stuff are little skinny 90 year old bald guys?

That does not describe me.

I'm just hoping that if I keep it up I will learn to float, or some other cool mystical Hoodoo Voodoo Guru business.

Bottom line is there is evident improvement week to week. That's good. Still have a long way to go but I am feeling good.

Chattaronga!

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Day 17...Shoulders and Arms Version 3.0

"Tip of the day...Don't smash your face in!"

Still sore from Mondays Chest/Back Fiasco. Tomorrow is going to be a sonovabiscuit since I think I upped the ante yet again today.

If you remember, last week I didn't feel the session was very X-like so I made certain to put the pedal to the metal this time. It was better today but still probley the easiest (for lack of a better word) routine of the first training block. Whoa! Sorry Tony...I didn't say it was easy, just easier. Jeez... Have a bowl of Okra soup already!

Wednesday = Ab Ribber X

So my sister informed me that she had done ARX and "was not a fan". Well no Sh!t! Ab Ripper X has no fans...except for maybe Megs (they call her "Kegs" because she does the whole P90X program with a keg on each shoulder).

Anyway, tomorrow is Yoga and then weigh-ins on Friday. By the way...I won last week.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Day 16...Plyo my oh my...

So much for this thing getting any easier. Third whack at PlyoX and I was still falling all over the damn place.

I will admit that both yesterday and today I was not amped on rolling out the P90X. I think I am in a little bit of a funk but you know, that crazy Tony Horton is really able to get me gunning. Thank God I actually respond to his motivation even through a TV screen.

Why I think I have a chance at this program is that primarily, it details exactly what I need to do, and Tony's enthusiasm is authentic. That matters.

Also, it helps that Brando jumped back in for round 2. Hey, misery loves company.

Shoulder still aches but today was a good day off of it. Ample soreness in my back and and chest is a constant reminder that I "brought it" yesterday so GOOD JOB JONNY!

Monday, January 25, 2010

Day 15...Chest and Back Cubed.

Big Brous Brando thought going full on during the first round of Chest and Back made sense, since if you go moderate (as recommended) you will still be weeded for round two when you are supposed to go all out (which is true).

Dude...let's just say when it got to "Dive Bombers" I crashed and burned. I am stoked on the rug burn across my forehead. Good thing I don't have a hot date this week.

Proof that I did not "dog it" is that I almost threw up. I kept it down but it was a panicky moment fo sho.

Monday is an Ab Ripper X day if you have not caught on yet. I currently struggle with reverse bicycle.

Hilary...maybe one of these days you can run through Ab Ripper with me. I really want your take on this MoFo.

Day 14...Rest day. In the nick of time too.

The week actually caught up with me somewhat. Pretty good moderate full body soreness.

Sorta enjoyed some baked wings at Santoras and cleaned them out of their aluminum Bud Light bottles. Sometimes I think they stock these just for me. It's good to feel special once in a while. While Sunday's I am relaxing the program...Here's the skinny people:

Los Golandrinas...Fired.
Fast food...Fired.
Tudor and Spunky's...Fired.
Corn Dogs...Fired.
Pretty much everything in my freezer...Fired.
Chips...Fired.
Oreo's...suspended...ok, Fired.
Pretty much everything in my Pantry...Fired. It was brought to my attention by the never one to pull any punches Anna, that my pantry resembled that of a 13 year olds.
Soda...Fired.

It's been a long time coming, and to Los Golandrinas...sorry for the sudden loss of revenue you are no doubt noticing in 2010.

Sunday Funday, you are missed already.

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Day 13...Kempo X is your friend.

So after finishing up the first 2 weeks of the P90X lifestyle, I conclude that the Kempo X workout flys by much faster than the other workouts.

On the other hand, Ab Ripper X is the longest 15 minutes of your life.

Continuing this analysis, the first 45 minutes of Yoga X is the most intense, and Plyo X is basically an hour of seeing if you can keep your heart from combusting and your knee caps from exploding.

If you are not dripping in sweat by the end of any of the workouts you are "dogging it" no question.

I hope for those of you who are pondering this lifestyle for yourselves, this information acts as a little primer before you jump in.

I am halfway through the first training block, have been pretty on point with the P90X Nutrition program (except Sunday's I relax it a bit) and have, as of 1/22, dropped just under 7 lbs.

So far so good, but my left shoulder is still feeling a little off from Yoga day.

Friday, January 22, 2010

Day 12...Back and Legs and back again

Legs is a toughy for me. I can't do one legged wall squats for squat.

I can't handle Ab Ripper X. I have done it six times now and I still got nothing on that mother.

Still not annoyed with Tony Horton although, I hear at the 1 month line is when it starts to grate on you.

Kempo X for Saturday and then Sunday Funday. It's going to be just lovely.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Day 11...Yoga X Part Deux

Totally dreaded today. It was so hard for me last week that I was basically counting the days until today.

So there is good news and bad news. Good news is that I felt a huge improvement over last week. Bad news is that I tweaked my shoulder a bit trying to execute one of the more awkward moves. Note to self: Know your limits Jonny-Son.

No way did I "dog it" today though. Sweat was pouring off my face just as the rain was pouring from the sky today.

Maybe next week I will see an even bigger improvement so instead of dreading the next Yoga X session I am actually looking forward to how much better I roll it out.

Still hard...but Boo YA!! I rocked it.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Day 10...Arms and Shoulders revisited

Maybe it was because I wasn't as sweaty and annihilated as yesterday that I felt a little let down today. I guess I will wait and see how sore my arms are tomorrow before I decide if I "dogged it" or not.

I don't think the pace is as tough on this day as it is on others. Or maybe I enjoy the exercises more and am more familiar with them that it is not as intense.

Don't get me wrong...it was not a walk in the park. Plus, it was an Ab Ripper X Day and you know how much of a beater that is...or don't you?

Dreading tomorrows Yoga. It's such a B!tch.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Day 9...Plyo. Hello!

I swear they didn't have workouts like this back in the day.

Definitely as time goes on, everything we do as people becomes bigger, faster, harder and more. Look at the X Games for instance. When I was a kid I thought I was the coolest kid in town because I could throw a 360 on my BMX bike...with or without a jump. Now there are triple backflip-twist-no hander- no footer-bar spins-with a tail whip thrown in for good measure...and everyone is doing them! How about snowboarding? Forget it.

If I were to coach wrestling again, I would want to incorporate this workout into the practices. The whole team would be CIF champions. Seriously.

Within the 1 hour period I:

-became soaked with sweat,
-pissed off my quads,
-thought I developed an anuerysm,
-thought I was having a heart attack,
-got a little dizzy,
-lost my balance and near fell onto my rower.

Still can't keep up with the one legged dude, but you know what? Having two legs means I am heavier and have to work harder so I don't feel so bad this week.

See you manana.

Monday, January 18, 2010

Day 8...Back and Chest. Again.

Weeks 1,2, & 3 are the same. That's good because you get an opportunity to fine tune the new moves and work on form. My form sucks on some of the exercises so I am all about getting the practice.

Week 2 still had me eating carpet after doing girly pushups to failure. The X means something for sure and unless you writhe in pain, fall on your face, or your eyes tear up from all the salty sweat flooding into them, you are "DOGGING IT"!

Brando, did you jump back in for round 2 today? You're the man brousaliah!

Day 7...is a rest day

...or Stretch X. I went to the Chargers/Jets playoff game and watched Dirty Sanchez get it done.

Didn't go overboard on the tailgate either so I pat myself on the back for exhibiting such amazing self control.

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Day 6...Kempo X

Yes! This was a fun one! Makes you sweat like a pig but definitely the most fun workout of the series thus far. I actually was the closest to keeping up with these guys than on any of the other workouts.

It's basically a cardio day that incorporates martial arts moves etc. I am not a big cardio guy, but this was the best cardio workout I have ever done. There was enough variety that I didn't get board and punching and kicking is always fun. Brando incorporates a heavy bag into it which I may have to look into. I think that would be an excellent release at the end of my work week.

With tomorrow being a rest day, I have successfully made it through the first week of P90X. I am still in tact, and still excited about it.

I wonder what the ratio of P90x programs ordered to P90x programs completed is.

Day 5...Still Alive

What's up Legs and Back? Ever since Tuesday's Plyometrics beat down by legs have not quite been the same. I am beginning to think that P90X is all about destroying your legs. Plyo + Yoga + Legs + Kempo = crippled.

I really focused on my form for this one and kept my own pace instead of trying to keep up with Crazy Tony and the Super Kids. I paused the DVD a couple times to make sure I got my stuff done right without blowing out my limits.

This was an Ab Ripper X day by the way. Third time this week and I noticed a little improvement already. That's encouraging. Still a total bitch...but encouraging.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Day 4...Yoga X. No problem.

Big problem. Maybe the hardest 45 minutes of my life. No idea how those SOB's did it.

Eff em all.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Day 3...Arms and Shoulders

Brando was right. Today was a pretty fun day. Not an easy day. A fun day.

All the challenging exercises were the ones that were new to me and were basically variations of some common stuff. I am sure that Tri-Rise-Flip-Grip-Supination-Fascination-Body Bag Extensions are pretty proprietary to P90X.

Getting used to using the bands which can be a little awkward.

Highlight of the day...Ab Ripper X. This straight up abuses you. It's a bitch. I can't do the whole 15 minutes and my form blows the whole way. That's fine. I have 87 more days to get better.

P.S. Legs are somehow holding on from yesterdays plyometrics.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Day 2 of 90...Plyometrics

#$%@!

I think at some point tomorrow I will be able to walk. I made it through the whole hour and didn't "dog" it even though the freaks on the DVD made me feel like I was. No kidding, they actually throw a guy in with only one leg so you can be 100% certain, without a shadow of a doubt, that you are indeed, a pile.

Yesterday, was "Chest and Back". The exercises were not foreign to me, but the pace and intensity were challenging. Threw in the "Ab Ripper X" at the end so I could flop around like an idiot on the ground for 15 minutes. Abs are sore today so something happened. That's good. Overall I felt good with only light soreness.

So Plyometrics. It is basically about an hour of jumping around. Several new movements and exercises which more or less destroy your legs. I am already wobbly an hour and a half later.

Getting out of bed tomorrow morning should be a complete joke.

Monday, January 11, 2010

Day 1 of the X

Was kinda dreading this day but at the same time was excited for it.

Am I tired? Yes.

Did it kick my ass? Yes.

Was I relegated to girly pushups? Yes.

Am I already feeling sore? Yes.

Do I think this program is going to work? I honestly think this program could transform Nell Carter into Nelly Furtado.

Will I make it through to day 90? Good damn question.

See you tomorrow.
